As my South American adventure approaches its 500th day, I find myself compelled to share the tales of my recent weeks and offer a glimpse back at the past 500 days.
Following a three-week expedition, I continued my journey and landed in Florianopolis. There, I spent approximately 2.5 weeks, enjoying a harmonious blend of computer work and beach time. This phase proved incredibly rejuvenating, providing a much-needed break and allowing me to craft a clear plan for the upcoming 7 months – more on that later.
After rejuvenating and delighting in the beauty of southern Brazil, I moved on to Paraty. The program continued much like in Florianopolis: a mix of beach vibes and a touch of party. These nearly 3 weeks were savored to the fullest, offering less action and more time for relaxation. The past months, while beautiful, were marked by one highlight after another. For those well-acquainted with long-term travel, the toll it can take is familiar. But no complaints here! Pure relaxation is precisely what I need now.
During this time, I reflected extensively, and my current plan unfolds as follows: I'll stay in Brazil until Carnival and then spend 4-5 weeks in Guatemala. As a conclusion to my South America chapter, I'll revisit a Spanish school for 1-2 weeks, building upon the foundation I laid earlier. Subsequently, my journey will likely take me to New Zealand for 4-6 weeks, with the final weeks planned for exploration in Asia or Africa.
How do I feel after 500 days of travel? This question often occupies my thoughts, leading to discussions with family and friends. I must say that I would undertake such a solo journey again, as it provides an exceptional opportunity for self-discovery and self-reliance – something I perceive as positive. Crafting the day according to personal whims and setting one's own goals are some of the perks. At the same time, traveling with family and friends has been mentally rewarding. Particularly, the 10 weeks with my mom and the 4 weeks with my dad have recharged my travel battery. I relish making connections, meeting people, and immersing myself in diverse cultures. I value the experiences I've been fortunate to have. Every day is unique, and none are alike. Thus, I wouldn't change anything about my past. The travel route has been perfect so far, and I am sure the upcoming months will be equally unforgettable in a positive sense.
There are only a few minor adjustments I'd consider. One of them being choosing a smaller backpack next time, as mine is quite large, and I barely use much of it. Simultaneously, I would shorten the language school stint at the beginning to 6 weeks, as 10 weeks were clearly too long. Otherwise, I am pretty content with everything and eagerly anticipate the weeks to come!
