Penguins, Orcas, and Pumas: Memories from the End of the World D/E/S

For my sister and me, Antarctica was an unforgettable adventure. Once again, it was a true privilege for me to be there – and I know for sure it won’t be the last time. Antarctica is one of my absolute favorite destinations, alongside Argentina, South Georgia, and the Pantanal. And deep down, I know I’ll return… maybe in a way I don’t even expect yet.

After this incredible chapter, our journey continued to El Calafate, where we visited the impressive Perito Moreno Glacier. While I stood in awe of the massive walls of ice, my sister spent a day horseback riding – a perfect way to experience the wild beauty of Patagonia.

Next, we headed to Torres del Paine with one clear goal: finding pumas. And we didn’t just get lucky – we were incredibly lucky. We found not just one, but two pumas, and were able to observe them from very close for several hours. It was one of those moments that’s hard to put into words. I even managed to take some photos, and my sister was absolutely happy. These are exactly the experiences that make a trip unforgettable.

Our journey then took us further north to Salta and Cafayate. There, we explored stunning salt flats and enjoyed the relaxed atmosphere of the region. Of course, a bit of shopping couldn’t be missed – my sister stocked up on beautiful fabrics, which makes perfect sense since she has alpacas back home. We spent five nights there, and it was an amazing time.

For the grand finale of our Argentina trip, we traveled to Puerto Madryn and the Península Valdés. We stayed four nights – and once again, nature delivered. We were lucky enough to see orcas on three different days. But the absolute highlight came on our final day: we witnessed orcas in hunting mode. They chased sea lions, caught them, and even played with them. It was both fascinating and emotional – a raw and honest glimpse into nature. Moments like this are extremely rare, and I’m incredibly grateful that I got to experience it together with my sister and friends. It was the perfect ending to an already incredible journey.

After that, we returned to Buenos Aires. To celebrate my sister’s birthday, we went out for a great dinner together with Brett – the perfect last evening. Shortly after, we made our way back to Switzerland, where we landed on April 2nd.

It was such a beautiful trip with my sister. We had an amazing time, and I truly believe she enjoyed it just as much as I did.Thank you, Mona, for this time – it means a lot to me.

And what’s next? Of course, the journey continues. The end is still far away. In mid-April, the next adventure begins – flights are already confirmed. But where am I going? That remains a little secret for now. What I can say is this: it’s a completely new place, a new country. And after that, I’ll return to more familiar paths.

Für mich und meine Schwester war es ein unvergessliches Abenteuer in der Antarktis. Es war für mich wieder einmal eine große Ehre, an diesem besonderen Ort zu sein – und ich weiß ganz genau: Es wird nicht das letzte Mal gewesen sein. Die Antarktis gehört für mich zu meinen absoluten Lieblingsreisezielen, zusammen mit Argentinien, South Georgia und dem Pantanal. Und tief in mir weiß ich, dass ich früher oder später zurückkehren werde… vielleicht auf eine Art, die ich selbst noch nicht ganz erwarte.

Nach diesem unglaublichen Kapitel ging unsere Reise weiter nach El Calafate, wo wir den beeindruckenden Perito-Moreno-Gletscher besuchten. Während ich die gewaltigen Eismassen bestaunte, nutzte meine Schwester die Gelegenheit, einen Tag lang reiten zu gehen – ein Erlebnis, das perfekt in diese wilde Landschaft passte.

Danach zog es uns weiter nach Torres del Paine. Dort hatten wir ein klares Ziel: Pumas finden. Und wir hatten nicht nur Glück – wir hatten unglaubliches Glück. Wir konnten gleich zwei Pumas aus nächster Nähe über mehrere Stunden beobachten. Ein Moment, der kaum in Worte zu fassen ist. Ich konnte sogar einige Fotos machen, und meine Schwester war überglücklich. Es sind genau solche Erlebnisse, die eine Reise unvergesslich machen.

Unsere Route führte uns anschließend weiter nach Salta und Cafayate. Dort erkundeten wir die beeindruckenden Salzseen und genossen die entspannte Atmosphäre der Region. Natürlich durfte auch ein bisschen Shopping nicht fehlen – meine Schwester hat sich ordentlich mit Stoff eingedeckt, was perfekt passt, da sie zu Hause selbst Alpakas hat. Wir verbrachten fünf Nächte dort, und es war eine rundum gelungene Zeit.

Zum krönenden Abschluss unserer Argentinienreise ging es nach Puerto Madryn auf die Península Valdés. Vier Nächte waren wir dort – und auch hier meinte es die Natur mehr als gut mit uns. Wir konnten an drei verschiedenen Tagen Orcas sehen. Doch der absolute Höhepunkt kam am letzten Tag: Wir durften Orcas im Jagdmodus beobachten. Sie jagten Seerobben, fingen sie und spielten mit ihnen. Es war gleichzeitig faszinierend und traurig – ein roher Einblick in die Natur. Solche Momente sind extrem selten, und ich bin unglaublich dankbar, dass ich das gemeinsam mit meiner Schwester und meinen Freunden erleben durfte. Ein perfekter Abschluss dieser Reise.

Danach ging es zurück nach Buenos Aires. Zum Geburtstag meiner Schwester gingen wir gemeinsam mit Brett noch einmal richtig gut essen – ein perfekter letzter Abend. Kurz darauf traten wir die Heimreise an und landeten am 2. April wieder in der Schweiz.

Es war eine wunderschöne Reise mit meiner Schwester. Wir hatten eine unglaublich gute Zeit, und ich bin mir sicher, dass es ihr genauso gefallen hat wie mir.Danke, Mona, für diese gemeinsame Zeit – sie bedeutet mir sehr viel.

Und wie geht es weiter? Natürlich geht es weiter. Das Ende ist noch lange nicht erreicht. Mitte April steht das nächste Abenteuer an – die Flüge sind bereits bestätigt. Aber wohin es geht, bleibt noch ein kleines Geheimnis. So viel kann ich sagen: Es ist ein neuer Ort, ein neues Land. Und danach geht es wieder in vertrautere Regionen weiter.

Para mi hermana y para mí, la Antártida fue una aventura inolvidable. Una vez más, fue un verdadero honor para mí estar allí – y sé con certeza que no será la última vez. La Antártida es uno de mis destinos favoritos junto con Argentina, South Georgia y el Pantanal. Y en el fondo sé que volveré… quizás de una manera que aún no puedo imaginar.

Después de este capítulo increíble, nuestro viaje continuó hacia El Calafate, donde visitamos el impresionante Glaciar Perito Moreno. Mientras yo contemplaba las gigantescas paredes de hielo, mi hermana decidió pasar un día montando a caballo, una manera perfecta de vivir la belleza salvaje de la Patagonia.

Luego nos dirigimos a Torres del Paine con un objetivo claro: encontrar pumas. Y no solo tuvimos suerte… ¡tuvimos muchísima suerte! No vimos uno, sino dos pumas, y pudimos observarlos muy de cerca durante varias horas. Momentos como ese son difíciles de expresar con palabras. Incluso pude tomar algunas fotos, y mi hermana estaba absolutamente feliz. Son experiencias como estas las que hacen que un viaje sea realmente inolvidable.

Después seguimos hacia el norte, a Salta y Cafayate. Allí exploramos los impresionantes salares y disfrutamos de la relajada atmósfera de la región. Por supuesto, no podía faltar un poco de compras: mi hermana se abasteció de telas, algo que tiene perfecto sentido ya que en casa también tiene alpacas. Pasamos cinco noches allí, y fue un tiempo realmente genial.

Como broche de oro a nuestro viaje por Argentina, fuimos a Puerto Madryn y la Península Valdés. Pasamos cuatro noches allí y, una vez más, la naturaleza nos sorprendió. Tuvimos la suerte de ver orcas en tres días distintos. Pero el punto culminante llegó en nuestro último día: ¡pudimos presenciar orcas en modo de caza! Perseguían lobos marinos, los atrapaban e incluso jugaban con ellos. Fue fascinante y a la vez emotivo, un vistazo crudo y real a la naturaleza. Momentos así son extremadamente raros, y estoy increíblemente agradecido de poder vivirlos junto a mi hermana y mis amigos. Fue el cierre perfecto de un viaje ya de por sí increíble.

Después regresamos a Buenos Aires. Para celebrar el cumpleaños de mi hermana, salimos a cenar juntos con Brett y disfrutamos de una gran comida – la despedida perfecta. Poco después, emprendimos el regreso a Suiza, donde aterrizamos el 2 de abril.

Fue un viaje maravilloso con mi hermana. Pasamos momentos increíbles, y estoy seguro de que a ella también le encantó tanto como a mí.Gracias, Mona, por este tiempo compartido, significa mucho para mí.

¿Y qué sigue ahora? Por supuesto, el viaje continúa. El final aún está lejos. A mediados de abril comienza la próxima aventura – los vuelos ya están confirmados. Pero, ¿a dónde voy? Eso sigue siendo un pequeño secreto por ahora. Lo que sí puedo decir es que será un lugar completamente nuevo, un país nuevo. Y después, volveré a rutas más conocidas.
