Volcanoes, Coastlines & Vanlife in New Zealand/ Vulkane, Küsten & Vanlife in Neuseeland D/E/S

After some amazing days in Tasmania, we continued our journey to New Zealand. We had already spent six weeks travelling here in autumn 2024, but New Zealand simply has too much to offer. Back then, the time wasn’t nearly enough, so we decided to come back once again.

This time, we deliberately chose to travel at the end of the season. There were significantly fewer tourists, the campsites were much more relaxed, and campervan prices were sometimes 20–40% lower compared to peak season. For us, it was definitely the right decision.

Right after landing, we headed to the campervan rental. I honestly have to say: Australia and New Zealand have by far the smoothest immigration processes I’ve experienced so far. Almost everything is automated, uncomplicated, and still extremely well organised.

At the rental company, we picked up our Wendekreisen campervan — designed for three people, with single beds, a shower, and a toilet. Perfect for us. Compared to the huge campervans you see everywhere here, it almost felt small, but to be honest, we had more than enough space.

From there, we immediately started driving north. We had planned a total of eight days for the North Island before continuing on to the South Island. During the first few days, we drove almost all the way up to Cape Reinga. In the end, though, we decided to skip the very last stretch and saved ourselves the final four hours of driving.

Throughout the entire trip, we kept looking out for orcas. And of course, exactly what I had hoped for happened: they were actually there. The problem? At a beach only 12 kilometres away — and I only found out the next day…

After that, we made our way back towards Auckland and continued via Rotorua along the east coast down to Wellington. We had an amazing time on the North Island — short hikes, incredibly good coffee, and new landscapes every single day. Honestly, I think the North Island is almost just as impressive as the South Island. The combination of volcanic landscapes, rugged coastlines, and fantastic hiking trails makes it incredibly diverse.

We spent one final night in Wellington before taking the ferry to the South Island. The crossing took around three hours and brought us to Picton.

From there, we drove straight to Abel Tasman National Park. We spent two nights there, went hiking, and enjoyed the beautiful weather. Personally, it’s one of the most beautiful national parks on the entire South Island. --- Nach wunderschönen Tagen in Tasmanien ging es für uns weiter nach Neuseeland. Im Herbst 2024 waren wir bereits sechs Wochen hier unterwegs – doch Neuseeland hat einfach zu viel zu bieten. Die Zeit damals reichte bei weitem nicht aus, deshalb sind wir jetzt nochmals zurückgekommen.

Diesmal entschieden wir uns bewusst für das Ende der Saison. Es hat deutlich weniger Touristen, die Campingplätze sind entspannter und die Camperpreise liegen teilweise 20–40 % unter denen der Hauptsaison. Für uns definitiv die richtige Entscheidung.

Direkt nach der Landung ging es zum Camperverleih. Ich muss wirklich sagen: Australien und Neuseeland haben mit Abstand die angenehmsten Immigration-Prozesse, die ich bisher erlebt habe. Fast alles läuft automatisch, unkompliziert und trotzdem sehr gut organisiert.

Beim Verleih holten wir unseren Wendekreisen-Camper ab – ausgelegt für drei Personen, mit Einzelbetten, Dusche und Toilette. Für uns perfekt. Wenn man die riesigen Camper hier anschaut, wirkt er zwar fast klein, aber ehrlich gesagt hatten wir mehr als genug Platz.

Danach starteten wir direkt Richtung Norden. Insgesamt planten wir acht Tage für die Nordinsel ein, bevor es weiter auf die Südinsel gehen sollte. In den ersten Tagen fuhren wir bis fast nach Cape Reinga hoch. Ganz bis an die Spitze schafften wir es dann doch nicht – die letzten vier Stunden Fahrt sparten wir uns.

Während der ganzen Fahrt hielten wir ständig Ausschau nach Orcas. Und natürlich passierte genau das, worauf ich gehofft hatte: Sie waren tatsächlich da. Das Problem? An einem Strand, nur 12 Kilometer entfernt. Und ich bekam es erst am nächsten Tag mit…

Anschließend ging es zurück Richtung Auckland und weiter über Rotorua entlang der Ostküste bis nach Wellington. Wir hatten eine richtig gute Zeit auf der Nordinsel – kleine Wanderungen, unglaublich guter Kaffee und jeden Tag neue Landschaften. Ehrlich gesagt finde ich die Nordinsel fast genauso beeindruckend wie die Südinsel. Die Kombination aus Vulkanlandschaften, wilden Küsten und tollen Wanderungen macht sie unglaublich abwechslungsreich.

In Wellington verbrachten wir noch eine Nacht, bevor wir die Fähre auf die Südinsel nahmen. Die Überfahrt dauerte rund drei Stunden und brachte uns nach Picton.

Von dort aus fuhren wir direkt weiter in den Abel-Tasman-Nationalpark. Dort verbrachten wir zwei Nächte, gingen wandern und genossen das traumhafte Wetter. Für mich persönlich ist das einer der schönsten Nationalparks der gesamten Südinsel. ---

Después de pasar unos días increíbles en Tasmania, continuamos nuestro viaje hacia Nueva Zelanda. Ya habíamos pasado seis semanas viajando por aquí en otoño de 2024, pero Nueva Zelanda simplemente tiene demasiado que ofrecer. En aquel entonces, el tiempo no fue ni de cerca suficiente, así que decidimos volver una vez más.

Esta vez elegimos viajar deliberadamente al final de la temporada. Había muchos menos turistas, los campings eran mucho más tranquilos y los precios de las campers estaban entre un 20 % y un 40 % más bajos en comparación con la temporada alta. Para nosotros, definitivamente fue la decisión correcta.

Justo después de aterrizar, fuimos directamente a recoger nuestra camper. Sinceramente, tengo que decir que Australia y Nueva Zelanda tienen, con diferencia, los procesos de inmigración más cómodos que he vivido hasta ahora. Casi todo funciona de manera automática, sencilla y aun así muy bien organizada.

En la empresa de alquiler recogimos nuestra camper de Wendekreisen, diseñada para tres personas, con camas individuales, ducha y baño. Perfecta para nosotros. Comparada con las enormes campers que se ven por todas partes aquí, parecía casi pequeña, pero honestamente teníamos más que suficiente espacio.

Desde allí comenzamos directamente nuestro viaje hacia el norte. Habíamos planeado un total de ocho días para la Isla Norte antes de continuar hacia la Isla Sur. Durante los primeros días condujimos casi hasta Cape Reinga. Al final decidimos no hacer el último tramo y nos ahorramos las cuatro horas finales de conducción.

Durante todo el viaje estuvimos atentos buscando orcas. Y por supuesto, ocurrió exactamente lo que esperaba: realmente estaban allí. ¿El problema? En una playa a solo 12 kilómetros de distancia… y yo me enteré recién al día siguiente.

Después regresamos en dirección a Auckland y continuamos vía Rotorua por la costa este hasta Wellington. Pasamos un tiempo increíble en la Isla Norte: pequeñas caminatas, café espectacular y paisajes nuevos cada día. Honestamente, creo que la Isla Norte es casi tan impresionante como la Isla Sur. La combinación de paisajes volcánicos, costas salvajes y rutas de senderismo increíbles la hace extremadamente variada.

Pasamos una última noche en Wellington antes de tomar el ferry hacia la Isla Sur. La travesía duró alrededor de tres horas y nos llevó hasta Picton.

Desde allí condujimos directamente al Parque Nacional Abel Tasman. Pasamos dos noches allí, hicimos senderismo y disfrutamos del clima perfecto. Personalmente, es uno de los parques nacionales más hermosos de toda la Isla Sur.
