Abenteuer Suriname – Ein Wiedersehen, Regenwald und wilde Tiere 🇩🇪 Adventure in Suriname – A Reunion, Rainforest, and Wild Animals 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿

Unsere Reise durch Suriname begann in der Hauptstadt Paramaribo – und mit einem ganz besonderen Moment: Nach 3,5 Monaten unterwegs konnte ich endlich meine Mama wieder in die Arme schliessen. Es tat gut, nach so langer Zeit wieder ein vertrautes Gesicht aus der Familie zu sehen. Doch unser Wiedersehen wurde gleich von einer kleinen Panne überschattet: KLM hatte ihr Gepäck in Amsterdam vergessen. Also mussten wir einen zusätzlichen Tag in der Stadt verbringen und darauf warten. Aber wir machten das Beste daraus.

Die ersten zwei Tage nutzten wir, um Paramaribo zu erkunden. Unser Zuhause für diese Zeit war die alte russische Botschaft – ein geschichtsträchtiges Gebäude, das heute als Gästehaus dient. Von dort aus streiften wir durch die Strassen, besuchten den Markt, probierten exotische Früchte und lokale Spezialitäten. Besonders faszinierend war das multikulturelle Flair der Stadt – niederländische Kolonialarchitektur, indische Tempel, chinesische Geschäfte und afrikanische Einflüsse mischen sich hier auf spannende Weise.

Doch wir wollten nicht zu lange in der Stadt bleiben, denn unser eigentliches Ziel lag in der Natur. Mit dem Boot ging es Richtung **Frederiksdorp**, ein kleines Resort mitten im Dschungel, das einst eine Plantage war. Hier tauchten wir tief in die Geschichte Surinames ein – eine Geschichte geprägt von Sklaverei, harter Arbeit und dem Widerstand der ehemaligen Sklaven, die eigene Gemeinschaften gründeten.

Natürlich stand nicht nur Geschichte auf dem Programm. Nachts brachen wir auf zur Kaiman-Sichtung. Mit Taschenlampen leuchteten wir über die Wasseroberfläche und suchten nach den leuchtenden Augen der Raubtiere. Und tatsächlich – wir entdeckten einen! Noch aufregender war, dass wir sogar einen Kaiman retten konnten. Ironischerweise sahen wir aber mehr Kaimane direkt im Resort als in der Wildnis.

Nach zwei spannenden Tagen ging es weiter nach **Peperpot**, einem ehemaligen Plantagengebiet, das heute ein Naturreservat ist. Dort erwartete uns ein absolutes Highlight: ein Nightwalk durch den Regenwald. Sobald die Sonne unterging, erwachte der Dschungel zum Leben. Die Geräusche wurden lauter, das Rascheln in den Blättern intensiver, und überall entdeckten wir Tiere, die tagsüber verborgen blieben. Wir sahen eine Schlange, Faultiere, riesige Insekten und viele andere faszinierende Kreaturen. Die Atmosphäre war magisch – als wären wir in eine andere Welt eingetaucht.

Bis hierhin war unser Suriname-Abenteuer noch verhältnismässig „komfortabel“ – wir schliefen in gemütlichen Unterkünften und hatten noch eine gewisse Verbindung zur Zivilisation. Doch das sollte sich bald ändern. Was uns als Nächstes erwartete, war ein echtes Abenteuer tief im Regenwald. Aber dazu mehr im nächsten Blog!

Our journey through Suriname began in the capital, Paramaribo, with a very special moment: after 3.5 months apart, I was finally reunited with my mom. Seeing a familiar face from my family again felt incredibly good. However, our reunion came with a small setback—KLM had left her luggage in Amsterdam. So, we had to spend an extra day in the city waiting for it. But we made the best of it.

For the first two days, we explored Paramaribo. Our home during this time was the old Russian embassy—a historic building now serving as a guesthouse. From there, we wandered through the streets, visited the local markets, sampled exotic fruits, and indulged in delicious local specialties. The city’s multicultural atmosphere was fascinating—Dutch colonial architecture blended with Indian temples, Chinese shops, and African influences, creating a unique and vibrant mix.

But we didn’t want to stay in the city for too long. Our real adventure awaited in nature. We took a boat to **Frederiksdorp**, a small resort deep in the jungle, once a plantation. Here, we delved into Suriname’s complex history—a past shaped by slavery, hard labor, and the resilience of former slaves who built their own communities.

Of course, history wasn’t the only thing on the agenda. At night, we set out for a caiman-spotting tour. With flashlights in hand, we scanned the water’s surface, searching for the eerie glow of reptilian eyes. And sure enough—we found one! Even more exciting, we were able to rescue a caiman. Ironically, though, we saw more caimans right at the resort than in the wild.

After two exciting days, we moved on to **Peperpot**, a former plantation area that has been transformed into a nature reserve. There, we had one of the highlights of our trip—a night walk through the rainforest. As the sun set, the jungle came alive. The sounds intensified, the rustling in the leaves grew louder, and suddenly, creatures that remained hidden during the day started to appear. We spotted a snake, sloths, massive insects, and many other fascinating animals. The atmosphere was magical—it felt as if we had stepped into a completely different world.

Up to this point, our Suriname adventure had been relatively “comfortable”—we stayed in cozy accommodations and still had some connection to civilization. But that was about to change. What happened next was a real adventure, deep in the rainforest. But more on that in the next blog!

Nuestro viaje por Surinam comenzó en la capital, Paramaribo, con un momento muy especial: después de 3,5 meses, finalmente me reencontré con mi mamá. Fue una gran alegría volver a ver un rostro familiar después de tanto tiempo. Sin embargo, nuestra reunión tuvo un pequeño contratiempo: KLM había dejado su equipaje en Ámsterdam. Así que tuvimos que pasar un día extra en la ciudad esperando a que llegara. Pero aprovechamos el tiempo al máximo.

Los primeros dos días los dedicamos a explorar Paramaribo. Nos alojamos en la antigua embajada rusa, un edificio histórico que ahora funciona como casa de huéspedes. Desde allí, paseamos por las calles, visitamos los mercados locales, probamos frutas exóticas y disfrutamos de la gastronomía surinamesa. Lo que más me sorprendió de la ciudad fue su diversidad cultural: la arquitectura colonial neerlandesa convive con templos hindúes, comercios chinos y fuertes influencias africanas, creando una mezcla vibrante y única.

Pero no queríamos quedarnos demasiado tiempo en la ciudad, nuestro verdadero objetivo era la naturaleza. Tomamos un bote hacia Frederiksdorp, un pequeño resort en medio de la selva, que antiguamente fue una plantación. Allí, nos sumergimos en la historia de Surinam, marcada por la esclavitud, el trabajo forzado y la lucha de los esclavos liberados que formaron sus propias comunidades.

Por supuesto, no todo fue historia. Por la noche, salimos a buscar caimanes. Con linternas en mano, iluminábamos la superficie del agua en busca del brillo de sus ojos. Y sí, logramos encontrar uno. Más emocionante aún, incluso pudimos rescatar un caimán. Curiosamente, vimos más caimanes en el resort que en plena naturaleza.

Después de dos días emocionantes, seguimos nuestro viaje hacia Peperpot, una antigua plantación convertida en reserva natural. Allí vivimos uno de los momentos más memorables del viaje: una caminata nocturna por la selva. Cuando el sol se ocultó, la jungla cobró vida. Los sonidos se hicieron más intensos, las hojas crujían a nuestro alrededor y poco a poco empezaron a aparecer criaturas que durante el día permanecen ocultas. Vimos una serpiente, perezosos, insectos gigantes y muchos otros animales fascinantes. La atmósfera era mágica, como si hubiéramos entrado en otro mundo.

Hasta ese momento, nuestra aventura en Surinam había sido relativamente “cómoda”: dormíamos en alojamientos acogedores y aún estábamos conectados con la civilización. Pero eso estaba a punto de cambiar. Lo que vino después fue una verdadera aventura en lo más profundo de la selva. Pero eso, lo contaré en el próximo blog.
