How to Make the White Continent Possible

I used to think the same way.

“The white continent is the only one missing… but Antarctica? That costs tens of thousands of dollars.”

So I buried the idea.

Until I met Jack and Sonja during an eight-day hike. They told me about agencies offering expedition cruises at a fraction of the prices you often see in Switzerland or through large travel companies.

Curious, I started emailing different agencies and asking for quotes. Antarctica wasn’t really part of my plan anymore — but maybe, just maybe, it could work for the right price.

After weeks of research and countless emails, I booked a 21-day expedition to the Falkland Islands, South Georgia, and the Antarctica.

Now, in March 2026, I’m going for the third time.

And I can honestly say: I have never paid more than $8,000 (excluding flights and transport to Ushuaia).

So yes — it’s possible.

1️⃣ First Question: What Do You Want to See — and What’s Your Budget?

Before comparing prices, ask yourself:

• What route do I want?

• How much am I willing to spend?

There are luxury cruises (9–11 days) starting at $20,000.But there are also expedition ships where 9–11 days can cost between $4,000 and $7,000. Sometimes even less — especially with last-minute deals or ships that aren’t fully booked.

Prices depend on:

• Cabin category

• Season

• Route

Flexibility makes a huge difference.

2️⃣ The Season Changes Everything

Antarctica’s season runs roughly from October to March — and each phase feels different.

🧊 October – Early Season

• Dramatic ice landscapes

• Fewer ships

• Wildlife slowly returning

• Some landings may be impossible due to heavy ice

Perfect for landscape photography.

🐧 December – January (Peak Season)

• Most ships operating

• Very active wildlife

• Penguins nesting and chicks hatching

• High probability of successful landings

Best for guaranteed wildlife encounters.

🐣 February – March (Late Season)

• Fewer ships again

• Penguin chicks growing and active

• More seals hunting

• Beautiful, dramatic sunsets

This is personally my favorite time.

3️⃣ Just Antarctica — or the Full Route?

Most expeditions depart from Ushuaia.Some leave from Chile, but I’ve never started from there, so I can’t speak from experience.

You can choose between:

• Antarctic Peninsula only (9–11 days)

• Antarctica + Falkland Islands

• Antarctica + South Georgia

• Or the full route: Falklands + South Georgia + Antarctica (18–23 days)

If you love wildlife, South Georgia is absolutely mind-blowing — massive king penguin colonies, elephant seals, dramatic landscapes.

But of course: longer routes mean higher costs.

4️⃣ What I Personally Look For

• Fewer than 200 passengers (IAATO rules allow only 100 ashore at once)

• Expedition ship, not a classic cruise ship

• Frequent Zodiac landings

• Flexible itinerary depending on weather

• More time ashore, not just sailing

Antarctica is about experience — not luxury.

5️⃣ When Should You Book?

This is the hardest question.

I don’t know:

• When you can travel

• How flexible you are

• When the best deals will appear

But here’s my advice:

👉 Subscribe to multiple agency newsletters.👉 Actively request quotes.👉 Set a clear maximum budget.👉 And when the price matches your budget — book.

Because one day later, it might be gone.

Flexibility is the key.

6️⃣ Costs People Often Forget

• Flights to Ushuaia

• Hotel nights before departure

• Mandatory insurance

• Optional activities (kayaking, camping, snowshoeing)

And then there’s the Drake Passage.

It can be calm.Or it can be very, very wild.

Final Thoughts

Antarctica is not cheap.

But it is not unreachable.

With patience, research, and flexibility, it’s absolutely possible to experience the White Continent without spending $20,000.

For me, it has been one of the most powerful travel experiences of my life.

And the fact that I’m going back for a third time probably says everything.

Ja, ich war auch mal so.Ich dachte mir: Dieser weisse Kontinent, der fehlt mir noch. Aber gleichzeitig war da dieser Gedanke: Das kostet doch locker ein paar zehntausend Dollar. Also habe ich die Idee schnell wieder begraben.

Bis ich auf einer achttägigen Wanderung Jack und Sonja traf. Sie erzählten mir von Agenturen, die Expeditionsreisen deutlich günstiger anbieten – teilweise zu einem Bruchteil dessen, was man in der Schweiz oder bei grossen Reiseanbietern sieht.

Neugierig geworden, schrieb ich verschiedene Agenturen an und fragte Offerten an. Eigentlich war die Antarktis gar nicht mehr mein Plan – aber vielleicht würde es ja zu einem guten Preis klappen.

Nach ein paar Wochen, vielen E-Mails und Vergleichen buchte ich meine erste 21-tägige Expedition zu den Falklandinseln, nach South Georgia und in die Antarktis.

Heute – im März 2026 – gehe ich bereits zum dritten Mal.Und ich kann dir garantieren: Ich habe nie mehr als 8’000 USD bezahlt (exklusive Flüge und Transport nach Ushuaia).

1️⃣ Die wichtigste Frage: Was willst du sehen – und was willst du ausgeben?

Bevor du Preise vergleichst, musst du zwei Dinge wissen:

• Welche Route interessiert dich?

• Wie hoch ist dein Budget?

Es gibt luxuriöse 9–11-tägige Reisen, die bei 20’000 USD beginnen.Es gibt aber auch Expeditionsschiffe, bei denen 9–11 Tage zwischen 4’000 und 7’000 USD kosten können. Manchmal sogar weniger – wenn Schiffe nicht voll sind oder es Last-Minute-Angebote gibt.

Wichtig: Der Preis hängt nicht nur vom Schiff ab, sondern auch von:

Kabinenkategorie

• Saison

• Route

• Nachfrage

2️⃣ Die Saison macht einen riesigen Unterschied

Die Antarktis-Saison dauert etwa von Oktober bis März. Jede Phase hat ihren eigenen Charakter:

🧊 Oktober – Frühe Saison

• Viel Eis, spektakuläre weisse Landschaft

• Weniger Schiffe

• Tiere kommen langsam zurück

• Risiko: Manche Landungen können wegen Eis nicht möglich sein

Perfekt für Landschaftsfotografie.

🐧 Dezember – Januar (Hochsaison)

• Die meisten Schiffe unterwegs

• Aktive Tierwelt

• Pinguine brüten, Küken schlüpfen

• Hohe Wahrscheinlichkeit für viele Anlandungen

Am sichersten für Tierbeobachtungen.

🐣 Februar – März (Späte Saison)

• Weniger Schiffe

• Junge Pinguine sind aktiv

• Mehr Robben und Jagdszenen

• Dramatische Sonnenuntergänge

Meine persönliche Lieblingszeit.

3️⃣ Nur Antarktis – oder mit Falklands & South Georgia?

Viele Reisen starten in Ushuaia (Argentinien).Manche starten auch in Chile – dazu kann ich persönlich nichts sagen, da ich immer von Ushuaia aus gestartet bin.

Es gibt verschiedene Routen:

• Nur Antarktische Halbinsel (ca. 9–11 Tage)

• Antarktis + Falklandinseln

• Antarktis + South Georgia

• Oder die „Ultimate Route“: Falklands + South Georgia + Antarktis (18–23 Tage)

Wenn du Tierliebhaber bist, ist South Georgia ein absolutes Highlight: riesige Königspinguin-Kolonien, Seeelefanten, unglaubliche Landschaften.

Aber: Jede zusätzliche Station erhöht die Dauer – und das Budget.

4️⃣ Worauf ich persönlich achte

• Maximale Anzahl Passagiere unter 200 (IAATO-Regel: Nur 100 Personen gleichzeitig an Land)

• Expeditionsschiff statt Kreuzfahrtschiff

• Viele Zodiac-Landungen

• Längere Aufenthalte pro Landung

• Flexible Routenplanung (wetterabhängig)

5️⃣ Wann buchen?

Das ist die Frage, die ich am meisten höre – und die ich am schwierigsten beantworten kann.

Ich weiss nicht:

• Wann du reisen kannst

• Wie flexibel du bist

• Wann die besten Preise kommen Aber mein Tipp:

👉 Melde dich bei mehreren Agenturen für Newsletter an.👉 Frage aktiv nach Angeboten.👉 Setze dir ein klares Budget.👉 Und wenn dein Wunschpreis erreicht wird – buche.

Denn manchmal kann ein Angebot einen Tag später weg sein.

Flexibilität ist der Schlüssel. Wer kurzfristig reisen kann, hat oft die besten Chancen.

6️⃣ Was viele vergessen

Zusätzliche Kosten:

• Flüge nach Ushuaia

• Hotelübernachtungen vor Abfahrt

• Versicherung (Pflicht!)

• Optional: Kajak, Camping, Schneeschuhwandern

Und ganz wichtig: Die Drake Passage.Sie kann ruhig sein. Oder wild. Sehr wild.

Fazit

Die Antarktis ist kein günstiges Reiseziel.Aber sie ist auch nicht unerreichbar.

Mit Geduld, Recherche und Flexibilität ist es möglich, diesen Traum zu verwirklichen – ohne 20’000 Dollar auszugeben.

Für mich war es eine der intensivsten Reiseerfahrungen überhaupt.Und dass ich jetzt zum dritten Mal zurückkehre, sagt wohl alles.

Sí, yo también pensaba así.

Me decía: Ese continente blanco… todavía me falta.Pero al mismo tiempo estaba ese pensamiento: Eso debe costar fácilmente varias decenas de miles de dólares.Así que enterré la idea bastante rápido.

Hasta que, durante una caminata de ocho días, conocí a Jack y Sonja. Me hablaron de agencias que ofrecen viajes de expedición mucho más económicos — a veces por una fracción de lo que se ve en Suiza o con grandes operadores turísticos.

Movido por la curiosidad, escribí a varias agencias y pedí presupuestos. En realidad, la Antártida ya no estaba en mis planes — pero quizá, si el precio era bueno, podría funcionar.

Después de algunas semanas, muchos correos electrónicos y comparaciones, reservé mi primera expedición de 21 días a las Islas Malvinas, South Georgia y la Antártida.

Hoy — en marzo de 2026 — voy ya por tercera vez.Y puedo garantizarte algo: nunca he pagado más de 8.000 USD (sin incluir vuelos ni transporte hasta Ushuaia).

1️⃣ La pregunta más importante: ¿Qué quieres ver y cuánto quieres gastar?

Antes de comparar precios, debes tener claras dos cosas:

• ¿Qué ruta te interesa?

• ¿Cuál es tu presupuesto?

Existen viajes de lujo de 9 a 11 días que comienzan en 20.000 USD.Pero también hay barcos de expedición donde 9 a 11 días pueden costar entre 4.000 y 7.000 USD. A veces incluso menos, si el barco no está lleno o aparecen ofertas de último minuto.

Importante: el precio no depende solo del barco, sino también de:

• Categoría de cabina

• Temporada

• Ruta

• Demanda

2️⃣ La temporada marca una gran diferencia

La temporada antártica dura aproximadamente de octubre a marzo. Cada fase tiene su propio carácter:

🧊 Octubre – Inicio de temporada

• Mucho hielo, paisajes blancos espectaculares

• Menos barcos

• Los animales comienzan a regresar

• Riesgo: algunas desembarcadas pueden no ser posibles por el hielo

Perfecto para fotografía de paisajes.

🐧 Diciembre – Enero (temporada alta)

• La mayoría de los barcos en ruta

• Fauna muy activa

• Los pingüinos incuban y nacen los polluelos

• Alta probabilidad de muchas desembarcadas

La opción más segura para observar fauna.

🐣 Febrero – Marzo (final de temporada)

• Menos barcos

• Pingüinos jóvenes activos

• Más focas y escenas de caza

• Atardeceres dramáticos

Mi época favorita personalmente.

3️⃣ ¿Solo Antártida — o con Malvinas y South Georgia?

Muchos viajes comienzan en Ushuaia (Argentina).Algunos también salen desde Chile — pero personalmente siempre he salido desde Ushuaia.

Existen diferentes rutas:

• Solo Península Antártica (aprox. 9–11 días)

• Antártida + Islas Malvinas

• Antártida + South Georgia

• O la “Ruta Ultimate”: Malvinas + South Georgia + Antártida (18–23 días)

Si amas la vida salvaje, South Georgia es un punto culminante absoluto: enormes colonias de pingüinos rey, elefantes marinos y paisajes impresionantes.

Pero: cada destino adicional aumenta la duración — y el presupuesto.

4️⃣ En qué me fijo personalmente

• Máximo 200 pasajeros (regla IAATO: solo 100 personas pueden estar simultáneamente en tierra)

• Barco de expedición, no crucero tradicional

• Muchas salidas en zodiac

• Tiempo prolongado en cada desembarque

• Planificación flexible según el clima

  
  

5️⃣ ¿Cuándo reservar?

Es la pregunta que más me hacen — y la más difícil de responder.

No sé:

• Cuándo puedes viajar

• Qué tan flexible eres

• Cuándo aparecerán las mejores ofertas

Pero mi consejo es claro:

👉 Suscríbete a los newsletters de varias agencias.👉 Pregunta activamente por ofertas.👉 Define un presupuesto claro.👉 Y cuando aparezca tu precio ideal — reserva.

Porque a veces una oferta puede desaparecer al día siguiente.

La flexibilidad es la clave. Quien puede viajar a corto plazo suele tener las mejores oportunidades.

6️⃣ Lo que muchos olvidan

Costes adicionales:

• Vuelos a Ushuaia

• Noches de hotel antes de la salida

• Seguro (obligatorio)

• Opcional: kayak, camping, raquetas de nieve

Y algo muy importante: el Pasaje de Drake.Puede estar tranquilo.O salvaje. Muy salvaje.

Conclusión

La Antártida no es un destino barato.Pero tampoco es inalcanzable.

Con paciencia, investigación y flexibilidad, es posible cumplir este sueño — sin gastar 20.000 dólares.

Para mí ha sido una de las experiencias de viaje más intensas de mi vida.Y el hecho de que vuelva por tercera vez lo dice todo.
