From Calm Seas to Wild Encounters: Our First Days in Antarctica 2/3🇺🇸🇩🇪🇪🇸

The Drake Passage was surprisingly calm – not what we expected at all, and definitely in our favor. My sister struggled a bit with seasickness on the first day, but after plenty of sleep and good food, she was back to normal quickly. I, on the other hand, spent most of the crossing in the bar, enjoying espresso martinis, great conversations, and that feeling that the real adventure was just beginning.

The next morning brought an unexpected announcement: we were ahead of schedule. By 9 AM, we were already heading out on our first Zodiac excursion – and just like that, we were right in the middle of it. Our first penguins, our first sea lions, resting on the beach as if our presence didn’t matter. The weather was on our side, making it a perfect start to Antarctica.

In the afternoon, we had our first landing on an island full of gentoo penguins. There was movement everywhere, constant noise, and this wild but fascinating chaos. And that’s how the next days continued – a mix of Zodiac cruises and landings, each one unique.

Then, on just our second day, something incredible happened: orcas. Five of them appeared right next to our ship, no more than 50 meters away. And they stayed. For 45 minutes, we watched them glide through the water – calm, powerful, unreal. It was my sister’s first time ever seeing orcas, and it couldn’t have been more perfect. To this day, we don’t know if they were B1 or B2 orcas, but honestly, it didn’t matter.

Shortly after, another highlight followed: kayaking among ice floes. For about two hours, we paddled through this surreal landscape, spotting whales, sea lions, and endless ice formations that left us speechless. It was one of those moments where everything just feels right – and we had an amazing time together.

The next day turned more intense. During a Zodiac cruise, the announcement came: “Leopard seal in the water.” We moved closer and ended up watching, for over an hour, as a leopard seal played with a gentoo penguin before eventually killing it. It was hard to watch, but that’s nature. The penguin thought it was safe on the ice, but there was no escape. Brutal, raw, and unforgettable – I also shared this moment on my Instagram.

Beyond all these experiences, life on board was just as special: incredible food, buffets, great conversations, and an amazing atmosphere with our American group as well as our German-Austrian friends. Add good wine, cocktails, and evening programs with music and desserts – the perfect way to end each day.

These first days in Antarctica were intense, surreal, and simply unforgettable.

Die Drake-Passage zeigte sich überraschend ruhig – ganz anders als erwartet und zu unserem Glück. Nur meine Schwester hatte am ersten Tag kurz mit der Seekrankheit zu kämpfen, doch nach viel Schlaf und gutem Essen war das schnell wieder vorbei.

Währenddessen habe ich die Zeit eher entspannt in der Bar verbracht – mit einem Espresso Martini, guten Gesprächen und dem Gefühl, dass das Abenteuer jetzt wirklich beginnt.

Am nächsten Morgen dann die Überraschung: Über den Lautsprecher wurde früh angekündigt, dass wir schneller als geplant ankommen. Bereits um 9 Uhr ging es auf die erste Zodiac-Ausfahrt – und wir waren sofort mittendrin. Unsere ersten Pinguine, unsere ersten Seelöwen, die entspannt am Strand lagen, als wäre das hier alles ganz normal. Dazu gutes Wetter – ein perfekter Start in die Antarktis.

Am Nachmittag folgte direkt das nächste Highlight: ein Landing bei einer Kolonie von Gentoo-Pinguinen. Überall Bewegung, Geräusche und dieses wilde, aber faszinierende Chaos. Und genau so ging es weiter – jeden Tag neue Zodiac-Ausfahrten oder Landgänge, jeder Moment besonders.

Schon am zweiten Tag dann etwas völlig Unerwartetes: Orcas. Fünf Tiere tauchten plötzlich neben unserem Schiff auf, keine 50 Meter entfernt. Und sie blieben. 45 Minuten lang konnten wir sie beobachten – ruhig, elegant und unglaublich nah. Für meine Schwester war es das erste Mal, Orcas zu sehen, und besser hätte dieser Moment nicht sein können. Bis heute wissen wir nicht, ob es B1- oder B2-Orcas waren, aber ehrlich gesagt war das völlig egal.

Kurz darauf wartete schon das nächste Erlebnis: Kajakfahren zwischen Eisschollen. Zwei Stunden lang paddelten wir durch diese beeindruckende Landschaft, sahen Wale, Seelöwen und riesige Eismassen, die einen einfach sprachlos machen. Es war einer dieser Momente, in denen alles passt – und wir hatten einfach eine richtig gute Zeit zusammen.

Am nächsten Tag wurde es dann plötzlich intensiv.

Während einer Zodiac-Fahrt kam die Durchsage: „Leopard Seal im Wasser.“ Wir fuhren näher hin und konnten über eine Stunde lang beobachten, wie ein Seeleopard mit einem Gentoo-Pinguin spielte, bevor er ihn am Ende tötete. Hart anzusehen, aber genau so ist die Natur. Der Pinguin dachte, er sei auf der Eisscholle sicher, doch es gab kein Entkommen. Ein brutales, aber unvergessliches Erlebnis – ich habe es auch auf Instagram geteilt.

Neben all diesen Momenten draußen war auch das Leben an Bord etwas ganz Besonderes: großartiges Essen, Buffets, gute Gespräche und eine super Stimmung mit unserer amerikanischen Gruppe sowie unseren deutsch-österreichischen Freunden. Dazu Wein, Cocktails und jeden Abend Musik und Desserts als perfekter Abschluss.

El Paso de Drake fue sorprendentemente tranquilo, muy diferente a lo que esperábamos y, sin duda, a nuestro favor. Mi hermana tuvo algunos problemas el primer día con el mareo, pero después de dormir mucho y comer bien, se recuperó rápidamente. Yo, en cambio, disfruté la travesía a mi manera: en el bar, con un espresso martini en la mano, buenas conversaciones y esa sensación de que la aventura realmente estaba empezando.

A la mañana siguiente llegó la sorpresa: anunciaron por los altavoces que íbamos adelantados. A las 9 ya estábamos saliendo en nuestra primera excursión en zodiac. Sin transición, directamente en medio de todo. Nuestros primeros pingüinos, nuestros primeros lobos marinos, descansando en la playa como si nada. El clima nos acompañaba, haciendo de este inicio en la Antártida algo perfecto.

Por la tarde tuvimos nuestro primer desembarco en una isla llena de pingüinos papúa. Había movimiento por todos lados, ruido constante y ese caos tan salvaje como fascinante. Y así continuaron los días: una mezcla de salidas en zodiac y desembarcos, cada momento especial.

Ya en el segundo día llegó algo completamente inesperado: orcas. Cinco aparecieron de repente junto a nuestro barco, a menos de 50 metros. Y se quedaron. Durante 45 minutos las observamos deslizarse por el agua: tranquilas, poderosas, irreales. Para mi hermana era la primera vez viendo orcas, y no podría haber sido mejor. Hasta hoy no sabemos si eran tipo B1 o B2, pero en ese momento no importaba.

Poco después llegó otro momento increíble: kayak entre témpanos de hielo. Durante unas dos horas remamos rodeados de un paisaje difícil de describir, viendo ballenas, lobos marinos y enormes masas de hielo que te dejan sin palabras. Fue uno de esos momentos en los que todo simplemente encaja.

Al día siguiente la experiencia se volvió más intensa.

Durante una salida en zodiac escuchamos el aviso: “leopard seal en el agua”. Nos acercamos y durante más de una hora observamos cómo una foca leopardo jugaba con un pingüino papúa antes de finalmente matarlo. Fue duro de ver, pero así es la naturaleza. El pingüino creía estar a salvo sobre el hielo, pero no tenía escapatoria. Un momento brutal, real e imposible de olvidar. También lo compartí en mi Instagram.

Más allá de todo lo que vivimos afuera, la vida a bordo también fue parte del viaje: comida increíble, buffets, buenas conversaciones y un ambiente genial con nuestro grupo americano y nuestros amigos alemanes y austriacos. Sumado a vino, cócteles y programas nocturnos con música y postres, cada día terminaba de la mejor manera.

Estos primeros días en la Antártida fueron intensos, únicos y simplemente inolvidables.
