Since January 13th, 2026, I’ve been traveling through Guatemala with my friends, and I can already say that this journey has exceeded all our expectations.

Our adventure began with one day in Antigua, one of the most beautiful colonial cities in Central America. Surrounded by colorful buildings, cobblestone streets, and impressive volcanoes, it was the perfect place to ease into the country. Even though our time there was short, Antigua gave us a wonderful first impression of Guatemala.

The next day, we took a shuttle to El Paredón on the Pacific coast, where we spent three nights right by the ocean. Life there was slow and relaxed: lots of sun, good food, cold drinks, swimming in the sea, and simply enjoying the moment. Time passed incredibly fast – as it always does in places where you immediately feel at home.

After those laid-back beach days, we continued to Lake Atitlán, one of the most famous and stunning volcanic lakes in the world. Surrounded by volcanoes and charming villages, we spent four nights there, exploring different towns around the lake, enjoying excellent food, and soaking in the unique atmosphere.

One of the absolute highlights was the Indian Nose hike – a sunrise trek that started early in the morning. Reaching the viewpoint just as the sun rose and seeing the entire lake spread out below us was an unforgettable moment and one of the most beautiful views of the trip.

After that, we returned to Antigua, packed up our now very full travel bags (four backpacks!) and headed toward Cobán. This was where I truly felt in my element again – surrounded by nature and wildlife. We stayed at a small lodge in the middle of the forest and booked two days in search of the legendary Quetzal, Guatemala’s national bird.

And what can I say – we were more than rewarded. We were practically surrounded by Quetzals. Seeing these incredible birds up close, with their bright red and green feathers, yellow beaks, and long flowing tails, was absolutely magical. For me, this was one of the biggest highlights of the entire journey. In the end, everyone was happy: I got my photos, we got the moment, and we all shared an unforgettable experience.

From there, we traveled to Semuc Champey, where we spent two nights. We swam in the famous turquoise river, relaxed, and enjoyed the beauty of this unique jungle paradise.

Our journey then continued to Flores and the Tikal National Park. An extraordinary place filled with ancient Maya ruins, surrounded by seemingly endless rainforest. In terms of nature, I would even place Tikal ahead of Machu Picchu – the dense jungle, the wildlife sounds, and the sheer scale of the forest make it feel truly wild and untouched. I can highly recommend this place to everyone. I was also lucky enough to photograph toucans and many other bird species there.

So far, we’ve experienced two incredible weeks full of adventure, nature, and unforgettable moments – and the best part is that two more weeks are still to come. More about those in the next blog.
