After experiencing the exciting adventure at Huayhuash, I continued my journey and made my way to Cusco, the former capital of the Inca Empire. I spent about two weeks there and was lucky enough to meet Jack and Sonja again, whom I had already met in Huaraz at Huayhuash. We spent two wonderful evenings together and enjoyed the time to the fullest.
Afterwards I went to Aguas Calientes, a suburb of Machu Picchu. I stayed there one night and the next morning we started early at 5am towards the mythical ruined city of the Incas. Even the first glimpse of Machu Picchu left me speechless. The breathtaking architecture and the arrangement of the buildings captivated me immediately. It was surreal and I could hardly believe I was actually there. I captured every moment with my camera and soaked up the entire atmosphere, knowing that such an opportunity would not be repeated soon. Later, I visited a viewing platform from which I had a magnificent overview of the entire ruined city. With a heavy heart I left Machu Picchu, because I could not miss my bus to Cusco. The ride there and back turned out to be a bit uncomfortable, as the bus was not very comfortable. I spent two more nights in Cusco before heading to my next destination.
On the last day in Cusco, I decided to visit the small Rainbow Mountains. These are less well known than the large, tourist-frequented versions, and mostly only popular with locals. Immediately I felt the difference, as there were 24 vehicles at the large Rainbow Mountains, while we were the only visitors to the small ones. It was a truly magical experience to enjoy the red hills and colorful mountains without the hustle and bustle of other tourists.
A day later, I continued my journey to Ica, to the desert of Huacachina. There I took an exciting sand buggy tour. It was just wonderful to watch the sunset and then try sandboarding. Both evenings there were parties at the hostel, which were extremely entertaining and rounded off my time in Ica perfectly.
Next on my itinerary were Arequipa, Puno and Lake Titicaca, and I was excited to see what adventures and amazing landscapes awaited me there.
