After Flores and Tikal, we crossed into a new country — at least for most of us. I had already been to Belize, but we all agreed it would be the perfect change of pace: a few days of snorkeling, swimming, sunshine, and simply slowing down.
We drove four hours to Belize City and took the ferry to Caye Caulker. Three nights on this small Caribbean island felt like exactly what we needed. Life moves slower there. We sang karaoke, explored the sandy streets, and fully embraced the island vibe.
The highlight was a full day out on the water. We went snorkeling on a sailboat, gliding across turquoise seas. Huge rays passed beneath us, nurse sharks cruised calmly through the water, and colorful fish surrounded us everywhere. The ocean was alive — and so were we. It was one of those days where you look around and just feel grateful.
Next stop: San Pedro, on Ambergris Caye, close to the Mexican border. Again, three nights. When we arrived, we walked along the beach and treated ourselves to a great dinner. The following day we rented a golf cart and explored the island freely. We drove to Secret Beach, had a couple of cold beers, searched for coconuts — and actually managed to crack one open and drink the fresh coconut water. Simple moments, big happiness.
We ended that day watching a glowing sunset melt into the ocean before finishing it off with some really good pizza.
The next day, I finally went diving again. It had been a while, and I felt it was time. And what a decision that was. Several nurse sharks, a large sea turtle, and as a true highlight, a few impressive reef sharks. What amazed me most was how close they came — curious, calm, almost playful — especially around my Insta360. Two dives, each over 50 minutes. Pure joy.
After Belize, we returned to Tikal for one final day. This time, we explored the ruins on our own. No guide, no schedule — just us wandering between the towering temples. The sound of howler monkeys echoed through the jungle, and we spotted toucans once more. It felt like the perfect closing chapter.
Then we flew back to Antigua Guatemala — where one of the biggest goals of our trip awaited: hiking Acatenango.
At 8 a.m., the climb began. Four hours uphill to base camp. We handed half our gear to local helpers who transported it with horses — a lifesaver. We reached camp feeling strong. But then came the big question: Should we continue to the second volcano? It meant another four hours of hiking.
We looked at each other.
And decided — yes.
The descent was easy. The next hour climbing back up was not. But then we stood there, face to face with the erupting Volcán de Fuego.
Explosions. Lava lighting up the sky. Smoke rising into the golden evening light. Raw, powerful nature — alive right in front of us.
For an entire hour, we watched the eruptions — some small, some massive. I captured incredible photos and even flew my drone. We were exhausted, but completely overwhelmed in the best possible way.
The hike back to camp was tough. Long. Steep. But we did it together. That made it special.
Back at base camp, we had dinner, continued watching the volcano erupt under the stars, and finally crawled into our sleeping bags — tired, fulfilled, proud.
The next morning, we hiked down and returned to Antigua, where a bus was waiting to take us to the Pacific coast. Two days of beach, good food, and well-earned recovery followed.
Then came the goodbyes. For Dominic and Lorina, the journey ended. They headed to the airport. Two days later, Carmen flew back to Switzerland as well.
It was a beautiful trip as a group of four. We supported each other, laughed endlessly, pushed our limits, and experienced Guatemala together. I truly hope they loved it as much as I did.
Now I have four more days in Antigua before the next one-month adventure begins — this time with my sister.
And as a little teaser… April is already bringing new travel plans.
Stay tuned.

Después regresamos a Tikal.
