Travel Report: Svalberg - An Adventure in the high North (D/S/E/P)

After reaching the northernmost point, we slowly set our course towards the eastern side of Svalbard. This region differs significantly from the west side, as the Gulf Stream passes the west coast and provides a warmer climate. The east side, however, is much colder and characterized by numerous ice fields and glaciers. On our way, we spotted polar bears again, as well as some whales. We undertook two shore excursions and then slowly made our way back to Longyearbyen. On the penultimate day, we experienced the so-called "Polar Plunge": with a water temperature of 1°C, we jumped into the icy water, which was an unforgettable and refreshing experience. My father also participated, and wonderful photos and videos were taken. After our return to Longyearbyen, we had one more day to explore the village before flying back to Oslo.

My Conclusion on the Arctic

The journey to the Arctic was one of the most impressive experiences of my life. The rugged, barren landscape of Svalbard, characterized by deep blue fjords, mighty glaciers, and endless ice fields, offers a unique and breathtaking backdrop. The encounters with wildlife were particularly fascinating. Watching the polar bears, majestic and at the same time threatening kings of the Arctic, was an experience I will never forget. The sightings of whales, seals, and countless seabirds also made this trip something very special.

Compared to Antarctica, where the wildlife is even more diverse and the nature appears more vibrant, Svalbard seems very barren, and the colors of the landscape are rather somber and earthy. However, this melancholic atmosphere offers excellent photo opportunities and gives the Arctic its own, rough charm. The stark beauty of this region, combined with the silence and vastness of the landscape, conveys a sense of remoteness and grandeur that is difficult to put into words.

The ship and the organization of the trip were generally good, although there were some organizational problems. The management was not always optimal, and information was often sparsely provided, so we had to obtain it ourselves. Some of the promised tours unfortunately did not take place, which was disappointing. Particularly in the last two days, there were some chaotic moments. Despite everything, the crew did their best to make the situation as pleasant as possible and to provide us with an unforgettable trip.

Encounters and Friendships

During this trip, I met many wonderful people. Particularly memorable are Frank and Suzanne, who initially were my smoking buddies and have now become real friends. We talked about everything possible and shared many opinions. Frank and Suzanne are passionate cruise fans and have already participated in numerous trips. Their stories and experiences deeply impressed me, and I hope to see them again one day.

Another special encounter was Aisha, with whom I shared many funny and unforgettable moments. A highlight was participating in an Indian birthday party she invited me to. This cultural experience greatly enriched my trip – thank you very much for that! Our conversations were deep and enriching, and it was nice to have someone of a similar age to exchange ideas with.

Reisebericht Svalbard: Ein Abenteuer im hohen Norden

Nachdem wir den nördlichsten Punkt erreicht hatten, setzten wir unseren Kurs langsam in Richtung der Ostseite von Svalbard fort. Diese Region unterscheidet sich stark von der Westseite, da der Golfstrom an der Westküste vorbeifließt und für ein wärmeres Klima sorgt. Die Ostseite hingegen ist wesentlich kälter und von zahlreichen Eisfeldern und Gletschern geprägt. Auf unserem Weg sichteten wir erneut Eisbären sowie einige Wale. Wir unternahmen zwei Landgänge und machten uns danach langsam auf den Rückweg nach Longyearbyen. Am vorletzten Tag erlebten wir noch den sogenannten "Polarplansch": Bei einer Wassertemperatur von 1°C sprangen wir ins eisige Wasser, was ein unvergessliches und erfrischendes Erlebnis war. Mein Vater nahm ebenfalls teil, und es entstanden wunderbare Fotos und Videos. Nach unserer Rückkehr nach Longyearbyen hatten wir noch einen Tag Zeit, das Dorf zu erkunden, bevor wir mit dem Flugzeug nach Oslo zurückkehrten.

Die Reise in die Arktis war eine der eindrucksvollsten Erfahrungen meines Lebens. Das Management war nicht immer optimal, Informationen wurden oft nur spärlich weitergegeben, sodass wir sie selbst einholen mussten. Einige der versprochenen Touren fanden leider nicht statt, was für Enttäuschung sorgte. Besonders in den letzten zwei Tagen gab es einige chaotische Momente. Trotz allem bemühte sich die Crew sehr, das Beste aus der Situation zu machen und uns eine unvergessliche Reise zu bieten.

Während dieser Reise habe ich viele wunderbare Menschen kennengelernt. Besonders in Erinnerung geblieben sind mir Frank und Suzanne, die zunächst meine Rauchfreunde waren und nun zu echten Freunden geworden sind. Wir haben uns über alles Mögliche unterhalten und in vielen Punkten die gleiche Meinung geteilt. Después de alcanzar el punto más septentrional, pusimos rumbo lentamente hacia el lado oriental de Svalbard. Esta región difiere significativamente del lado occidental, ya que la Corriente del Golfo pasa por la costa oeste y proporciona un clima más cálido. El lado este, sin embargo, es mucho más frío y está caracterizado por numerosos campos de hielo y glaciares. En nuestro camino, avistamos nuevamente osos polares, así como algunas ballenas.
