Also kehrten wir unverrichteter Dinge in unser Hotel zurück.

Two Unforgettable Weeks in French Guiana

We were lucky to spend two wonderful weeks in French Guiana—without too many plans, just letting the country unfold before us. We knew that Suriname, despite not being part of Europe, was better developed than French Guiana, so we were curious about what awaited us here.

Our journey began in Cayenne, where we rented a car and explored the area with a few short hikes. One of our first highlights was the vibrant carnival parade in town—a spectacle full of music, dance, and colorful costumes. Afterward, we visited a wildlife rescue center, which felt a bit like a zoo. We saw incredible animals like pumas and ocelots, but their enclosures were far too small, which was quite heartbreaking.

From Cayenne, we continued to Saint-Laurent-du-Maroni, where we planned to cross the border into Suriname. But before that, we spontaneously booked a jungle tour. The next morning, we arrived at the meeting point on time—only to find no guide in sight. After half an hour, an assistant told us he had no idea where his boss was. So, we returned to our hotel, disappointed. Around midnight, we finally received an apology: the guide had gotten stuck in the jungle. Unfortunately, we had a few experiences in French Guiana where reliability was an issue—unlike in Suriname, where everything seemed to run much more smoothly.

Since the tour fell through, my mom and I decided to go on our own little adventure. Our goal: to find sea turtles! We spent the night in Mana and headed to the beach in the evening, hoping for a sighting. Just as we were about to give up, the magic happened—a giant sea turtle emerged from the ocean, making her way to a nesting spot. It was an incredible moment!

Next, we traveled to Kourou, excited to witness the launch of the Ariane 6 rocket—something we had been looking forward to for a long time. But as soon as we arrived, we got the disappointing news: the launch had been postponed by eight days. It was frustrating, as this would have been an unforgettable experience.

Finally, we returned to Cayenne, and soon after, it was time to say goodbye. My mom flew to Paris while my next adventure awaited—Brazil!

These two weeks were filled with adventures, surprises, and unforgettable moments—from the markets of Suriname to the turtle beaches of French Guiana. Thank you, Mom, for this amazing time together! Anytime again!

Next stop: Brazil—and something tells me the entry process might be more complicated than expected...
